📌 5 tips for ordering mulch
- ✓ Always add 10% for waste and settling. Mulch compacts and settles 10-15% within the first month. This calculator adds 10% automatically; bump to 15% for sloped or windy areas.
- ✓ Order bulk for jobs over 2 cubic yards. Bagged mulch at $5 per 2 cu ft bag equals $337.50/yd³ — while bulk mulch averages $25-45/yd³. At 2+ yards, bulk delivery saves 50-75% even with delivery fees.
- ✓ Keep mulch away from tree trunks. Never pile mulch against the trunk (mulch volcanoes). Leave a 2-3 inch gap to prevent rot, disease, and pest damage. Spread mulch in a 3-6 foot ring around trees instead.
- ✓ Install landscape edging first. Metal, plastic, or stone edging keeps mulch in place and prevents grass from creeping into beds. Edging costs $1-4 per linear foot and saves hours of re-edging each season.
- ✓ Refresh annually, do not over-mulch. Add 1 inch of fresh mulch each spring for color. Total mulch depth should never exceed 4 inches — too much suffocates roots. Remove old mulch if it has built up beyond 4 inches.
