📌 5 tips for ordering concrete
- ✓ Always add 10% for waste. Spillage, over-excavation, uneven subgrade, and concrete left in the chute can easily eat 5-15% of your pour. This calculator adds 10% automatically; bump to 15% for difficult sites.
- ✓ Order ready-mix for jobs over 1 cubic yard. Below 1 yd³, most concrete companies charge a short-load fee ($40-100) that wipes out the convenience. Bags are cheaper and let you work at your own pace.
- ✓ Pre-mixed bags vs. bagged concrete mix. For post holes, "fast-setting" concrete (Quikrete Fast-Setting) sets in 20-40 minutes — no mixing needed, just pour dry mix into the hole and add water. For slabs, use standard 80-lb concrete mix and rent a mixer for anything over 10 bags.
- ✓ For slabs, thickness matters more than length. Doubling the thickness doubles the concrete; doubling the length only doubles it for the same width. A 10x10 slab at 4" = 1.23 yd³; at 6" = 1.85 yd³ (50% more).
- ✓ Check delivery minimums and access. A full ready-mix truck is 10 yd³ and weighs 40,000 lb. Most companies deliver a minimum of 1 yd³ with a short-load fee, but the truck needs clear access to your pour site — 10+ feet of width and 14+ feet of vertical clearance for the chute.
