📌 5 tips for smarter unit price shopping
- ✓ Always check the unit price, not the shelf price. A "family size" box isn't always cheaper per ounce than the regular size. Stores are required to post unit prices on shelf labels — but they can be hard to find or in inconsistent units.
- ✓ Convert units before comparing. If one product is priced per pound and another per ounce, convert both to the same unit. 1 pound = 16 ounces. This calculator does the conversion for you.
- ✓ Watch for "shrinkflation." Manufacturers sometimes reduce the package size while keeping the price the same. The unit price reveals this instantly — the per-unit cost goes up even though the shelf price doesn't change.
- ✓ Factor in what you'll actually use. A bulk package with a lower unit price isn't a good deal if half of it expires before you use it. The best unit price only matters if you use the full quantity.
- ✓ Compare store brands vs name brands. Store brands are often 20-40% cheaper per unit with similar quality. Use this calculator to see exactly how much you save switching from a name brand to a store brand.
