📚 GPA quick reference
- ✓ 4.0 scale: A=4.0, A−=3.7, B+=3.3, B=3.0, B−=2.7, C+=2.3, C=2.0, C−=1.7, D=1.0, F=0.0 — the standard for most US colleges
- ✓ 4.3 scale: same as 4.0 but A+ = 4.3 (used at schools that award A+ grades; allows GPAs above 4.0)
- ✓ 5.0 scale (weighted): adds +0.5 for honors and +1.0 for AP/IB/dual-enrollment — used by most US high schools
- ✓ Cumulative GPA: combines all courses across all semesters. Add up all your credit hours, not just the current ones
- ✓ Dean's List: typically requires 3.5+ semester GPA. Honor Roll: 3.0+. Summa cum laude: 3.9+ (varies by school)
How it works: GPA = (sum of grade points × credit hours) ÷ (sum of credit hours). For each course, the letter grade converts to grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, etc.), then we multiply by the course's credit hours. Adding all those products and dividing by the total credit hours gives the semester GPA. For weighted scales, honors courses get +0.5 and AP/IB courses get +1.0 added before the calculation.
