📌 5 tips to maximize your commission earnings
- ✓ Negotiate tier accelerators. The biggest earnings jump comes from rates above quota. A 2x accelerator (double the base rate above 100% attainment) can add 50–100% to your commission if you consistently exceed quota.
- ✓ Know your effective rate. Divide total commission by total sales. If your effective rate is below your headline rate, your tiers may be too back-loaded — negotiate a higher starting tier.
- ✓ Track attainment monthly, not quarterly. Monthly tracking lets you pace: if you are at 40% attainment at mid-month, you know to push. Quarterly tracking masks slumps until it is too late to recover.
- ✓ Understand clawbacks. Many commission plans claw back commission on churned or returned deals. Factor a 5–10% clawback reserve into your earnings expectations, especially in SaaS.
- ✓ Model different scenarios. Use this calculator with 80%, 100%, and 120% of quota to see your earnings range. If the gap between 80% and 120% is too small, your commission rate may be too low; if it is too large, your base may be too low for income stability.
