- ✓ Best accuracy is between 6% and 10%. The Rule of 72 is nearly perfect at 8% (9.0 years estimated vs 9.006 exact). At rates below 4% or above 20%, the estimate drifts — always check the exact compounding number.
- ✓ Use it for quick comparisons, not precise planning. The Rule of 72 is a mental shortcut. When you need exact numbers for retirement planning or loan analysis, use the exact formula or this calculator's exact mode.
- ✓ Remember it works in both directions. Want to double in 10 years? 72 / 10 = 7.2% required rate. Want to double in 6 years? 72 / 6 = 12% required. The rule is symmetric — rate in, years out, or years in, rate out.
- ✓ Account for inflation separately. The Rule of 72 uses nominal rates. If inflation is 3% and your investment earns 8%, your real (purchasing-power) doubling time uses the real rate of ~5%, which gives 14.4 years, not 9.
