Building habits that stick

Research shows habits form through a loop: cue (trigger), routine (the behavior), reward (the payoff). To build a new habit, attach it to an existing one (after my morning coffee, I journal), make it tiny (one pushup, not thirty), and reward yourself immediately. To break a bad habit, identify the cue and change the routine. Most habit failures come from trying to do too much too soon.

Why track habits?

Tracking creates a visual chain of progress (don't break the chain). It reveals patterns — you might notice you always skip the gym on Mondays. It provides accountability, even to yourself. It gives satisfaction — seeing 30 days of meditation feels different than guessing. But beware: obsessive tracking can backfire. If tracking your weight becomes an anxiety trigger, or you feel guilty after every missed day, step back. Tracking is a tool, not a religion.

Sample habit ideas

Health: drink 8 glasses of water, 10,000 steps, sleep 7+ hours, take vitamins, exercise 30 min. Mind: meditate 10 min, journal, read 20 pages, no phone first hour. Productivity: deep work block, inbox zero, weekly review. Relationships: call family, weekly date night, compliment someone. Money: track every expense, review budget weekly. Choose 2-3 to focus on, not 10. Stack them: after I pour my coffee, I meditate for 5 minutes, then journal.
