Every emoji is a Unicode code point or sequence. Most modern emojis are sequences of multiple code points joined by Zero-Width Joiner (ZWJ) characters. The "๐จโ๐ฉโ๐ง" family emoji is actually five characters: man (U+1F468), ZWJ, woman (U+1F469), ZWJ, girl (U+1F467). Skin tone modifiers (๐ฝ) are also added as separate characters. This is why some emojis break in older software โ the OS doesn't support the ZWJ sequences.
