The Unicode emoji system

Every emoji is a Unicode code point or sequence. Most modern emojis are sequences of multiple code points joined by Zero-Width Joiner (ZWJ) characters. The "๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘ง" family emoji is actually five characters: man (U+1F468), ZWJ, woman (U+1F469), ZWJ, girl (U+1F467). Skin tone modifiers (๐Ÿฝ) are also added as separate characters. This is why some emojis break in older software โ€” the OS doesn't support the ZWJ sequences. Emoji version 16.0 (2026) added hundreds of new emojis including the Face with Bags Under Eyes, Harp, Splatter, and Root Vegetable.

Emoji etiquette in professional contexts

Use sparingly. One or two emojis per message is professional. Twenty emojis makes you look unhinged. Never use emojis in legal documents, contracts, or formal business communications. Some emojis have meanings you don't intend โ€” the ๐Ÿ‘ peach can be inappropriate, the ๐Ÿ™ folded hands can read as "high five" in some cultures, and the ๐Ÿ™‚ smiley face reads as passive-aggressive to younger users. When in doubt, use words.

Emoji and accessibility

Screen readers announce emojis by their official Unicode name, which can be confusing ("shallow pan of food" for ๐Ÿฅ˜). Wrap emojis in <span role="img" aria-label="..."> for better accessibility. Always provide text alternatives when the emoji carries meaning. For example, a ๐Ÿšจ warning emoji should be paired with the word "Warning" for screen reader users.
