Frequently Asked Questions

What is a healthy body fat percentage?

For men, 8–19% is considered fit to healthy. For women, 21–33% is the healthy range. Athletes often carry 6–13% (men) or 14–20% (women). Levels above 25% (men) or 32% (women) are classified as obese.

How accurate is the US Navy body fat method?

The US Navy circumference method is accurate to within about 3–4% of DEXA scan results for most people. It is less accurate for very lean athletes or those with high visceral fat. DEXA or hydrostatic weighing are more precise for clinical use.

What measurements do I need?

Men need waist and neck circumferences. Women need waist, neck, and hip circumferences. Use a flexible tape measure and measure at the same time each day for consistency — ideally first thing in the morning.

What is lean body mass?

Lean body mass (LBM) is everything in your body that is not fat — muscles, bones, organs, water, and connective tissue. It equals total body weight minus fat mass and is a key indicator of metabolic health.
