Auto Equity Calculator

Find out how much equity you have in your car. Enter your vehicle's current value and remaining loan balance to see your trade-in equity, loan-to-value ratio, and whether you're upside down on the loan.

Check KBB, Edmunds, or NADA for your private-party value. Use trade-in value if you plan to sell to a dealer.

Find this on your most recent loan statement, your online account, or by calling your lender.

Used to show interest savings if you pay off the loan early. Find on your loan statement.

How long you've owned the car. Used to estimate depreciation rate and equity trend.

📝 How to use this auto equity calculator

  1. Find your car's current value — use Kelley Blue Book, Edmunds, or NADA. Look up the private-party value for your exact year, make, model, trim, and mileage. If you plan to trade in at a dealer, use the trade-in value instead (typically 10-15% lower).
  2. Find your remaining loan balance — check your most recent monthly statement, your online account, or call your lender. This is the payoff amount, not your monthly payment.
  3. Enter both numbers — the calculator does the rest. You'll see your equity (positive or negative), your loan-to-value (LTV) ratio, and what you'd net from a trade-in vs. private sale.
  4. Read the advice — the calculator tells you whether to trade in now, pay off early, or wait — based on your equity position and (optional) interest rate.

📌 5 things to know about car equity

Disclaimer: This calculator provides equity estimates for educational and planning purposes only. Actual market values vary by region, condition, and current demand. Loan balances should be verified with your lender. The tool does not account for early-payoff penalties, gap insurance, or lease-specific equity rules (leases don't build equity — you return the car at the end of term). Use as one input in your car ownership decisions, not as the sole criterion.
